Artist Statement
A photographic exploration of tree stumps focused on each stump’s diversity of form, texture, and plane. The ongoing study initially began in April 2020 and now has over 100 specimens. The intent is to capture and represent a commonly overlooked foundation of a structure that no longer stands in a focused, scientific way. The presentation mirrors a scientific collection of specimens in the regimented and consistent presentation of each subject without irrelevant information. This allows the viewer to focus on the most notable differences in the form and shape of the stump, the variation in texture and tree rings, and the differing depth in planes.
